The course introduces students to Ottoman history through a combination of chronological and thematic approaches. It begins with a brief overview of the major political, social, and economic developments from the emergence of the Ottoman state to the end of the empire.

During the weekly sessions, specific research questions and current historiographical approaches are examined for each historical period. Topics include, for example, the role of warlords in the early Ottoman period, the concepts of decline and transformation, the relationship between climate change and socioeconomic crisis, new forms of social interaction, and the ways in which wealth was accumulated and managed.

Students are expected to study specific scholarly literature and present in class the main arguments and research questions arising from it. They are also encouraged to critically assess different interpretations, formulate evidence-based arguments, and develop their own views through discussion and debate.
